20 You clicked on this episode, which must mean you want more productivity and get more work done. You want more time to do those things you love and you want to be able to shut work off at the end of the day. And you were focused and intentional. When there are a million things to do, you feel like you’re stretched thin and your to do list looks like a 5-year-old’s Christmas list. You have to be in the mindset of ‘I’m going to get this done.’
33 I’m going to share with you seven things to help you get things done. Recently I let my calendar get out of control and I felt like I wasn’t showing up for my clients, my Academy students, and my family. I had to put some systems in place and they’re so simple you can put them into place right now.
Look at your calendar, if your calendar is crazy, you might need to wait a few weeks to do this. Look at the tasks in your calendar and chunk your tasks. If you’re recording podcasts, can you set aside one day a month or a week so you can do all of them at the same time.
36 When you switch tasks, and you go to something else, switching tasks burns your energy because your brain has to keep up. If you chunk your time, you’ll be able to switch to a few things, instead of a million in one day.
37 Use a timer – I use the Miracle Cube and each side has a different number or timer. It matches your calendar and you can set your time and when the timer is up, you’re done with the task. It forces you to get your task done in the set amount you give yourself. You’ll train yourself to get your tasks done and you’ll learn to love it.
07 Turn off all your notifications. Turn off your Facebook messenger, your Instagram notifications, your email and your phone. Tell your kids that you’re working so they aren’t disturbing you.
05 Schedule response times in your calendar. You can do every day or three times a week. You can set an amount of time to respond to social media messages or emails and you know that you’ll answer someone. There is an expectation that if people send you emails or messages, they will get an instantaneous response. Well, people need to understand you’re running a business and when you’re done with the other things that need to get done, you’ll answer them. You can change your voice mail, your out of office messages for email and text messages. You’ll provide peace of mind for yourself and them.
42 Drown out the distractions. If you find that noise pulls your focus, get some noise canceling headphones and put on music or white noise to keep you focused and help you not being distracted.
54 Outsource. If you haven’t hired yet, hire your kids or the neighbor. There is something that you’re doing that you don’t need to be doing. I always thought I had to be a do-it yourselfer and what I’m learning is that they’re so much better at this than I am. There are certain things that I like and that I’m good at, but it gives peace of mind that I don’t have to do it all. Pick one thing and do a short-term trial period to try it out. You can have someone mow your lawn, do your laundry or schedule your social media. Yes, it’s an expense and a hard pill to swallow, but it will make you feel financially abundant and it will start paying off. If you want to leverage and you want to be able to sit down and have supper with your family, you’ve got to start putting some of the systems in place.
