Why is it that it is so much easier to write a formal essay than it is to write a conversational blog post or email?

You think to yourself, “I am just going to sit down and write a quick blog post” and before you know it, there you are, 3 frustrating hours later, still editing, refining and trying to make it sound more authentic.

We’ve all been there, believe me! Which is why I’m sharing my 3 best practices to speaking in your voice and sounding authentic when you blog (or email, for that matter).

If you want to capture the attention of your readers, write to them the same way you’d speak to them.

Here are a few tips to ensure your blog posts, copy and emails sound like you:

 1. Video tape yourself.

Then have the video transcribed. This works great even if you don’t plan to keep the video. I love this method because I feel like I’m actually talking to a real person this way.

Want to know a secret? This post was actually done on video first. But the sound quality turned out horrible. I didn’t want to trash the video, so I decided to just turn it into a regular post. Win-Win. 🙂

2. Always read your blogs out loud before you publish them.

If something trips you up or sounds too formal, fix it so it sounds more like your voice. If initially writing your content is what stumps you, try dictating it instead. Let the computer type your words as you say them. Then, all you have to do it go back through and clean up any mistakes and misspellings.

3. Don’t Strive for Perfection

Rest assured that no matter which route you choose to write your posts, the main objective is to get your message out there! There are so many people who can benefit for the value you have to share with the world. Don’t stress about it being perfect. No one is ever perfect at first (or ever, really). But with practice, we will start to get better. The keyword there is practice! Remember…
