IN THIS EPISODE
2:39 The feature on Sports Center on Katherine Switzer who was the first woman to ever run the Boston Marathon. Her race was in 1967 when women weren’t allowed to participate in events like this.
4:20 The only thing stopping us is our limiting beliefs. The only thing stopping us from doing what we really want is our own limiting beliefs.
4:56 Tonya shares Katherine’s story. Her dad told her when she told him she wanted to be a cheerleader, his response was no, she shouldn’t be a cheerleader, but instead have people cheer for her. She was validated by her dad.
The director of the race saw during the race that she was a woman and tried to rip her bib number off. Her boyfriend knocked down the director and told her to run.
Another mind shift moment happened after the director tried to stop her. She contemplated quitting after that because she was upset and embarrassed. She could have quit after that, but she thought to herself if I quit right now, no one will believe women deserve to be here or they can do this.
She went on to partner with Avon to get women’s only races. In 1984, because of her work, the marathon was added to the Olympics.
12:20 You can be fearless, it’s a choice. Sometimes that’s the support of others or an anchor.
13:10 If running isn’t for you, what’s your anchor? What is it that makes you feel powerful? You are enough. What reminds you of that? Commit to that step. Tonya would love to know what your anchor is. Tag her in social media – Instagram is @tonyarineer.
