The throat chakra is the energy center responsible for effective, confident communication. An open, balanced chakra gives you freedom to speak your truth, share your opinions, speak up when you have something to say, be authentic without fear of repercussions, ask for what you want, say no when you want, to say yes when you’re called to, have confident conversations—even those that may result in conflict—and share your message with the world.

Signs of an Imbalanced Throat Chakra

If you find that you tend to get taken advantage of, avoid conflict or confrontational conversations, suppress your opinion, have a hard time finding the right words when you’re upset, are afraid to advocate for yourself or get nervous when meeting new people, you could have some blockages in your throat chakra.

How an Imbalanced Throat Chakra Affects Your Business

Being able to communicate effectively and have confident conversations is an essential skill that every business owner must have (or start practicing). You simply cannot avoid having conversations, especially if you are the CEO! You are going to encounter many situations where you have to be willing to have those uncomfortable conversations. 

So, how do you unblock your chakra so that you can get back to balance and feel totally fine in all of these situations? Well, you can practice some different things, both practical and metaphysical. Let’s start with practical.

Practical Tips for Balancing the Throat Chakra

Balancing your throat chakra and giving yourself permission to release the negativity and fear around speaking up, having difficult conversations, asking for what you need and sharing your message is a game-changer—in business and in life! Do this work and you’ll thank me later, I promise!

  1. Take the time you need to process information before responding. During particularly difficult or intense conversations, especially if you’re not quick on your feet, you may find yourself getting flustered and drawing a blank when trying to communicate your thoughts and feelings. That’s perfectly normal. To better communicate what’s on your mind, you may want to process the information you’re receiving before you respond. One of the things you practice doing is saying, “You know what, you make a great point,” or, “you ask a great question, I need some time to process that and I’ll get back to you. Can I call you tomorrow or can we follow up and revisit this in an hour?” By doing this, you are asking for the time required to give a thorough and thoughtful response that is authentic and true for you.
  2. Create a company policies and procedures outline—a document that outlines your company rules, personal boundaries—what is acceptable and what isn’t—in your business. So when people ask for something that is out of scope, you can simply say, “Actually, that goes against policy. I can, however, do this instead.” Or when somebody requests something and you’re feeling tempted to accommodate (and you know you shouldn’t), you could say ” I actually have a procedure for that. Let me walk you through what that’s going to look like.” This step will help also help you to set up healthy expectations with people at the beginning of any business relationship—letting clients, new team members and new partners know exactly what to expect, how to best communicate with you and what the policies are making future communication go much more smoothly. And make sure you stick to those consequences because that is what builds a sense of structure into your business so that it’s not emotional, it’s objective.
  3. Practice using your assertive language. Your words convey your level of confidence and help people to feel as though they can trust you. Practice replacing non-assertive words with language that shows you are sure of what you’re saying. For instance, rather than saying, “I’m thinking about. . .” say, “I’ve decided to. . .”. When you use your assertive language and convey the message that says, “I’ve got this” people respond by thinking, “Oh, okay, she’s got this. I don’t need to argue. No reason to try to convince her otherwise. I have no reason to doubt her.” If you want people to trust that you know what you’re doing, using more assertive language will help you accomplish that.
  4. Role Play. I can’t tell you how much of a difference role playing will make when you’re starting to get used to using assertive language, are learning to be more outwardly communicative and speak more effectively. Practice with a coach, with an accountability partner or a friend. And yes, role playing can feel uncomfortable, weird and a bit awkward, but it works and it gets you the results that you want.

Try implementing the practical steps mentioned above to balance your throat chakra. You’ll find yourself getting more confident with your conversations, improving your communication with people, sharing your opinions, speaking up when you want to, and asking for what you need, without fear or guilt. And both your business and personal life will begin to prosper!

Metaphysical Practices to Balance your Throat Chakra

Now, a few metaphysical ways for you to unblock and balance your throat chakra are to 

  1. Surround yourself with the color blue, both in your home decor, wear more blue, eat blue foods, fruits and vegetables.
  2. Carry blue crystals—blue kyanite, lapis lazuli, turquoise or aquamarine. 
  3. Surround yourself with scents (essential oils, incense or candles) that open up the throat chakra like spearmint or peppermint.
  4. Meditate. Visualizing a clear, vibrant blue light dancing around your body. Or, you can imagine that light as an energy sphere, the size of a grapefruit, circling your throat and giving you the power to speak your mind and say what you need with assertiveness and confidence.
